Welcome to Pita Pit

Ram Venkannagari operated an Indian food restaurant in Paris for 10 years before moving to the U.S. five years ago.

Having friends and family in the area, he said he moved to South Carolina, and once stateside, he began looking for an entry into the American food market.

"I was looking for some healthy food," he said. "I was really impressed with Subway, but I thought people are tired of Subway. I was researching about what to do, and I came across Pita Pit. I had actually tried Pita pit in Columbia and one in Charlotte, and I thought that would be a good option."

Venkannagari opened a Pita Pit in Florence in July 2013, and he will soon open his second Pita Pit at 1029 Broad St., Suite 2.

He said he is attracted to the market in smaller cities because it is easier to connect with the community.

The first Pita Pit franchise in Western South Dakota is set to open for business Monday at 725 Main St., in Rapid City.

The restaurant is owned by Tim Smith, his parents Steve and Kathy Smith, his wife, Lisa Smith and his friend Justin Henrichsen.

The Pita Pit is a casual quick-service restaurant that specializes in build-it-yourself pitas. With more than 50 ingredients available, there are over a trillion different potential pita combinations that could be ordered, Tim Smith said.

There are some suggested pitas recipes, but customers tend to order their own personalised pitas, said Tim Smith, who attended a two-week training session at the franchise headquarters in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
